I don’t watch sporting events for the players or the game. Seeing incredible athletes accomplish phenomenal feats that I wouldn’t dream of doing in a billion years...nope, not for me. Rather, I watch sports because of the officials. To be so close to the action despite having none of the athletic prowess, yet still…

A dull day with the Brooklyn Nets is merely the calm before a Kyrie Irving storm. On Friday afternoon, the Nets star point guard added another chapter to his tumultuous tenure in Brooklyn by placing his finger on a metaphorical dead man’s switch by outright requesting a trade from the Nets.

Brooklyn Nets heat magnet and resident conspiracy theorist Kyrie Irving wants the team to deal him elsewhere prior to the NBA trade deadline or he’ll leave as a free agent, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

An arrest warrant was issued Thursday for Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon for allegedly pointing a gun at a woman in downtown Cincinnati last month.

Jerry Jones is so far into his own head that he’s paralyzed by fear (or the effects of old age). In one of Jones’ many rambling interviews where he talks Dallas football, the Cowboys owner said it’s “pretty impressive” that the L.A. Rams and Philadelphia Eagles have made the Super Bowl after going all in, but he…

David Tepper is saying all the right things — he just isn’t doing them. The Carolina Panthers owner made waves this week when he insisted that he was doing his part in breaking up the NFL’s “old boys’ network” of wealthy white owners that seldomly hire Black people and minorities to positions of power, particularly as…

After leaving fans trying to decipher her cryptic tweets in Taylor Swift style about where she would end up next season, Breanna Stewart has gone back to her home state of New York.

There is some comfort in knowing that the higher-ups at CBS see and hear the same things we do during their NFL broadcast. They can’t miss that Tony Romo is merely making noises like some sort of fusion between a pin and whoopee cushion and not much else. It seems they even tried to do something about it. But when…

If you’ve ever wondered why your Uncle Frankie was screaming at the top of his lungs six inches away from the television screen even though his favorite team wasn’t playing in the game, it was because the mortgage payment was coming up and if Cam Newton had fallen on that fumble, maybe he wouldn’t have had to find a…

Nick Siranni has come a long way from his cringeworthy, double-talk-filled, introductory press conference in 2021. As the Philadelphia Eagles head coach, he has led the team to consecutive playoff appearances. This season they had the best record in the NFC and are playing in the Super Bowl. An accomplishment so…

The Arena Football League is making a comeback and is set to hit the field again in 2024. Arena football has been around in a couple of different incarnations since 1987 but hasn’t been active since 2019. For a long time, it was a primary alternative to the NFL in the United States. Now it feels like just another…

It’s no secret that this current iteration of the NBA has struggled to make its regular season meaningful. Star players miss games night to night, and the matchups we anticipate because they could be a preview of the postseason all of the sudden are rendered moot. Only two things really move the NBA’s needle on social…

A rising tide lifts all boats, so they tell me. The tide on the women’s side of AEW, for pretty much its entire three-plus-year existence, seemed pretty stagnant, with the occasional spike that promised more but rarely delivered a change in altitude. While not wanting to put too much on her shoulders (though they…

What do Bob Myers, Travis Schlenk, Rob Pelinka, and Monte McNair have in common? They’re each experiencing different stages of the NBA’s own burgeoning nepo baby regimes.

Nathaniel Hackett to the Denver Broncos was thought to be a way to entice Aaron Rodgers to request a trade to the Mile High city. Obviously, that didn’t happen, but it’s possible his being hired to the New York Jets’ staff is an attempt to make Gang Green — with its young stars and playoff-caliber defense — an ideal…

The NFL quarterback market is drying up and the offseason hasn’t officially begun yet. With Tom Brady announcing his second retirement via Twitter, the next available decaying legend is Green Bay Packers signal-caller Aaron Rodgers. He has returned to his usual cryptic, blameless self, and who knows what his future…

Multiple girls basketball coaches were fired from a Virginia high school after a 22-year-old assistant coach was caught impersonating a 13-year-old junior varsity player who was out of town during a January game, according to WAVY TV10.
Video allegedly shows former Churchland High School (Portsmouth, Va.) coach Arlisha Boykins posing as the youth player during the Jan. 21 game. WAVY TV 10 gained access to some video clips and aired them during a news segment, which now lives on YouTube. The player, who is presumed to be Boykins, can be seen blocking an opponent’s shot, celebrating a made layup, and grabbing a rebound after her missed free throw.
Boykins has been fired, as was the head coach of the junior varsity team and the head coach of the varsity team, according to the news outlet.
Churchland administration met with parents and players after the incident. Both the junior varsity and varsity teams decided to opt out of the remainder of the season, according to 13 News Now. Both teams were scheduled to play their final game on Feb. 8; the varsity team instead ended the season with an 0-13 record, and the junior varsity ended at 5-3. MaxPreps shows that the JV game on Jan. 21 against Nansemond River (Suffolk, Va.) was a forfeit.
The family of the 13-year-old told WAVY that their daughter does not plan to attend Churchland next season.
“Coaches always preach to the kids about integrity and those types of things, so I was just shocked,” the father said in the video clip.

On Jan. 26, Juju Watkins set a Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) record of 45 points. That school record lasted all of one weekend.
The five-star senior and USC signee blew away her previous record on Tuesday, racking up 60 points in the undefeated Trailblazers’ win over Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.). Watkins led the way on the team’s senior night, also recording 21 and five steals in the 88-39 win.
Watkins was shooting from Caitlin Clark range, drilling 3s from near half court and somehow outdoing her 45-point, 16-rebound, eight-assist game from five days prior.
Los Angeles Times reporter Luca Evans tweeted some clips of Watkins’ otherworldly performance.
This is ridiculous. Juju Watkins just pulled up from near-half court for the second time in a row near end of halftime. Everyone went nuts. She has 26 points at the half. Sierra Canyon girls’ basketball is up 41-23 on Notre Dame. pic.twitter.com/BXrcCt37Ni

And there it is. Juju Watkins with a new career high, set 5 days after she set a new career high. 47 points. Oh — as I was typing this tweet she hit a three. 50 points. Just ridiculous. On Sierra Canyon’s senior night. pic.twitter.com/PokfjVNbDw
— Luca Evans (@bylucaevans) February 1, 2023
Watkins is ESPN’s top-rated player in the class of 2023. She is a gold medalist, the 2020 Sports Illustrated Sports Kid of the Year, a two-time Los Angeles Times Girls Basketball Player of the Year and an All-American.
In February 2022, she signed with Klutch Sports Group as the agency’s first female athlete client.
“Her ability to be someone that young women and young men look up to as a player … She just has that it,” said Klutch Sports Group CEO and Founder Rich Paul in an interview at the time with USA TODAY High School Sports.
“She approaches things the right way, she’s very astute and very understanding of her surroundings at a very young age. I’ve been around that before, so I know what that looks like. I’m excited for what’s up ahead.”
The Trailblazers, who play their final game of the regular season on Thursday night, enter with a 25-0 record and the No. 1 spot in the MaxPreps rankings.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Major League Baseball and the NFCA will team up for a free event for local youths on Feb. 9, the day before the Division I Leadoff Classic begins at the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater, Fla.
Schedule (PDF) | Tournament Central | Purchase Tickets
“We are thrilled to partner with MLB on this special initiative, bringing softball to all communities,” NFCA Executive Director Carol Bruggeman said. “MLB provides unique, fun opportunities for young athletes through their PLAY BALL events. The positive connections made between collegiate student-athletes, coaches and eager youth athletes reflects why the sport of softball is thriving. I can think of no better event to kick off the Division I softball season than with our Leadoff Classic, as the passion and enthusiasm surrounding this event will be sky high. MLB has made a huge commitment to growing diamond sports at the grassroots levels. We appreciate their support of the NFCA and the sport of softball.”
“To have an opportunity to partner with an organization such as NFCA to provide a free opportunity for the community’s youth is such an exciting way to launch the D1 college softball season,” said Vice President of Baseball & Softball Development at Major League Baseball, David James. “For young people to have an unique introduction to the sport through an event like ‘PLAY BALL’ that gets them excited about the game and helps build upon the broader baseball and softball community is an honor to take part in.”
Check-in for the 3:45 p.m. event will begin at 3:15, and is open to participants who are in grades K-6. No prior baseball or softball experience or equipment is necessary. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet student-athletes from the Leadoff Classic teams. All event participants will receive a special co-branded NFCA/MLB PLAY BALL t-shirt, wristband, and bat-and-ball set to take home, plus a treat from Kona Ice.
“The NFCA is an exceptional organization, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to work together in building this community of current and future softball players by providing free youth events like ‘PLAY BALL,'” said Sarah Padove, Major League Baseball Manager of Baseball & Softball Development. “We are so excited to start the D1 college softball season with the NFCA Leadoff Classic and this event.”
Seventy-five student-athletes from the 16 participating teams are scheduled to assist with the event, and will sign autographs afterward.

Now that National Signing Day has come and gone, pretty much all of the elite recruits from the class of 2023 have chosen a college. Yesterday, the nation’s No. 1 Athlete Nyckoles Harbor committed to South Carolina and the top undecided quarterback Jaden Rashada picked Arizona State.
One big name who we didn’t get a decision from is Pinnacle (Ariz.) tight end Duce Robinson, who’s now the top uncommitted player in the cycle.
In an interview on ESPN, Robinson explained that he simply doesn’t know where he wants to play yet and wants to have full conviction when he does.
Elite TE Duce Robinson makes it official on ESPN that he will not sign today.
He said he simply doesn't know where he wants to go yet and wants to have full conviction when he does make his commitment.
— Shotgun Spratling (@ShotgunSpr) February 1, 2023
Robinson (6-foot-6, 225 pounds) is the top-ranked tight end in 2023 and is No. 17 overall in this class according to the composite rankings.
28 different schools have extended offers, but Robinson has narrowed his list down to a handful of finalists. Georgia remains the heavy favorite but USC, Alabama, Texas and Oregon are also reported to still be in the mix.

Pittsburg (Calif.) four-star prospect Jaden Rashada came into National Signing Day as the top uncommited quarterback in the country. He’s now made his choice.
In a statement released on his social media page Rashada announced that he’s committed to Arizona State.
“Just want to start off by thanking the Lord for my journey and the strength to get through whatever was & is put in front of me, thank you to everybody who truly knows me for me! Just want to keep this short and let it be known I’ll be attending Arizona State University, my childhood dream school, my fathers alma matter, a place where I’m happy and a school where the Head Coach has always had my back! Glad to truly be home! Can’t wait to carry on the family name at the University and start my journey! Forks up!”
Rashada’s recruitment has been the most volatile of this recruiting cycle. He initially committed to Miami, then flipped to Florida. However, a reported $13 million NIL deal with a booster organization fell through, and Rashada requested and was granted a release from his National Letter of Intent.
Soon after, several new schools got into the race but TCU and Arizona State emerged as the favorites to get him.
No matter how they got it done, the Sun Devils have landed a potent dual-threat QB in Rashada. As a Senior, he threw 32 touchdown passes and rushed for seven more scores. He’s ranked No. 6 at his position and No. 82 overall in his class.
Arizona State’s 2023 class is now ranked No. 36 in the country.

National Signing Day has arrived, and we’re keeping an eye on the top 100 football recruits in the country according to the USA TODAY High School Sports Composite Player Rankings, which averages the grades from the three biggest recruiting services: 247Sports, ESPN and Rivals.
Some athletes have already made commitments, but now the real fun begins, as the top undecided recruits make it official and sign on the dotted line.
Here are the top 100 recruits from the class of 2023, updated with the college they have chosen to begin their next football chapter.
(Note: the recruit’s measurements and position are courtesy of 247Sports.)

The best uncommitted football player in the country has made his decision.
Archbishop Carroll (DC) five-star Athlete Nyckoles Harbor just announced that he has committed to playing college football at the University of South Carolina.

— NBC4 Sports (@NBC4Sports) February 1, 2023
Harbor (6-foot-5, 225 pounds) is arguably the most versatile player in this recruiting class. He plays wide receiver, edge and serves as a returner on special teams. He’s ranked first among prospects who play multiple positions and No. 19 nationally.
It’s a huge recruiting win for the Gamecocks, who have been favored to get Harbor’s commitment for several months. Head coach Shane Beamer couldn’t contain his excitement after the news broke.
Wow#WelcomeHome @Nyck1k !!!#AboveAllEl23 #WhosNext ?
Let’s Go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
— Shane Beamer (@CoachSBeamer) February 1, 2023
Michigan and Maryland were also in the running and Oregon made a late push over the weekend, but in the end Harbor chose South Carolina, which has arguably had a better start to the new year than any other program in the country.
The Gamecocks’ class of 2023 ranks No. 19 in the nation.
