Taylor's 'concern' over Pucovski's technique

Former Test skipper Mark Taylor says the concerns regarding Will Pucovski's concussion issues go far beyond cricket.

Former Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero scored during Wednesday’s long-delayed unofficial Barcelona debut. Aguero, 33, had been sidelined by a calf injury suffered just before this season’s kick-off. The 2021 Copa America winner with Argentina inked a two-year deal in May, arriving on a free transfer to end a decade-long attachment to the Sky Blues. The ex-Atletico Madrid star enjoyed a gentle – and productive – return to action this midweek. He was hooked soon after netting during a 30-minute cameo versus lower-league UE Cornella which ended in a 2-2 draw at Barca’s training ground. Aguero will hope to be available to make his competitive bow against Valencia in La Liga on Sunday.

Barcelona vice-president Rafa Yuste has poured cold water on speculation that the club might make a move for Erling Haaland next summer. Despite CEO Ferran Reverter hinting at the possibility, Yuste prefers to take a more prudent view. “I prefer to be governed by the principle of prudence. We come from a situation of a huge economic crisis, therefore prudence,” Yuste told Mundo Deportivo. “I do not see Haaland [signing] happening now. From now to next year we will see what the situation is and what we can do in terms of signings. “First we have to lay the foundations of a house that we have found in ruins, so let’s focus first on fortifying it. “Let’s feed those at home first and then we’ll see what else we can do, without losing sight of the fact that we always want to have the best, and Haaland is one of the best in the world.”
Barcelona hope young defender Ronald Araujo has not picked up a serious problem after injury forced him off during Uruguay’s 3-0 defeat to Argentina. Araujo, 22, was taken off in the 73rd minute on Sunday. The centre-back suffered a blow to the leg and was unable to continue. Ice was placed onto the affected area and his employers will wish that he just suffered bruising, rather than a muscular complaint. With Raducanu secured, fans are in for a real treat from day one of the three-day championship. The high-energy women’s match takes place alongside a series of elimination matches featuring six of the world’s best male tennis players. “We have consistently set the bar high year-on-year with our line-up, to the point where fans expect the best. The return of the Championship with fans was a milestone moment and we wanted to reward their loyalty with another unrivalled experience,” said John Lickrish, CEO, Flash Entertainment. “While working with Abu Dhabi government entities and key partners to ensure the Championship’s safe return we had our eyes on the in-form players in both the men’s and women’s games. Seeing Emma’s star rising with superb performances in the summer, and the fans’ reaction, we knew we had to bring her to Abu Dhabi, with Emma’s remarkable victory at the US Open reinforcing that decision. “Emma – and her opponent – who will be announced in coming days, will continue the legacy of the MWTC women’s match, which has a history of attracting the biggest names in some epic encounters. This year’s full line-up, to be announced in the weeks ahead, underlines Abu Dhabi’s capability to host world-class international events featuring global talent, in a safe and secure environment.” New British No. 1 and world No. 22 Raducanu meanwhile, is looking forward to making her MWTC debut, and following in the footsteps of greats including Maria Sharapova and Serena and Venus Williams. “I’ve never been to Abu Dhabi and can’t wait to go and play in the championship. I know the UAE is celebrating its 50 th  anniversary at the beginning of December, so I’m sure it’s going to be amazing there and I’m excited to experience everything the country has to offer both at the event and culturally,” said Raducanu. Tickets, starting from AED 100 for adults and AED 50 for children, are available from ticketmaster.ae and Virgin Megastores across the UAE. In line with current health and safety protocols, social distancing measures will be in place within the stadium and throughout the Tennis Village. Premier Hospitality tickets are available, offering fans a premium F&B menu and courtside seating providing prime viewing and an unparalleled experience. Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri to race with special liveries on what should have been Honda’s home race weekend. At this weekend’s Formula 1 Turkish Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing and Scuderia AlphaTauri will race with unique liveries to celebrate the teams’ race-winning alliance with power unit supplier Honda and to give the manufacturer’s fans in Japan a chance to wave farewell to the company, on what should have been the occasion of its final home race at Suzuka. The twin Red Bull Racing RB16B cars of Max Verstappen and team-mate Sergio Perez will feature a predominantly white livery inspired by the legendary Honda RA 272 car, in which US racer Richie Ginther secured the company’s maiden Formula 1 win at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix. Meanwhile, at AlphaTauri, the rear wings of the AT02 cars driven by Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda will feature the one-word message “ありがとう” (arigato,) meaning “thank you”. Since Red Bull’s partnership with Honda was launched in 2018, the Japanese manufacturer has helped both Red Bull Racing and AlphaTauri to reach the top of the Formula 1 podium; with Red Bull Racing scoring 13 victories to date and AlphaTauri taking a memorable win on home soil in Italy in 2020. In all, Red Bull and Honda have together scored 35 podium finishes and 11 pole positions to date. Red Bull Racing Honda CEO and Team Principal, Christian Horner said: “We had all been looking forward to giving Honda’s Japanese fans a chance to celebrate our extremely successful relationship in Formula One, on home soil at Suzuka. With the race falling victim to the pandemic, we just couldn’t let the weekend pass without paying tribute to Honda and its amazing home fans by bringing a little bit of its heritage to Istanbul. The livery chosen for our cars pays homage to Honda’s remarkable F1 journey and hopefully we can give fans another victory in those legendary colours this weekend.” Koji Watanabe, Chief Officer for Brand and Communication Operations at Honda added: “Everyone at Honda is extremely disappointed that the Japanese Grand Prix has had to be cancelled, while fully understanding and agreeing with the reasons behind this decision. We were especially keen to race at Suzuka Circuit, as it is our last year in the sport, at a time when both our teams are performing very well. We also appreciate that the Japanese fans were particularly looking forward to seeing Honda’s last appearance here and Yuki Tsunoda driving in his home race. We know that a special livery cannot replace what would have been a very exciting weekend, but we hope that Honda fans around the world, especially those in Japan, will accept this special livery as a small token of our appreciation of their continued support over so many years.”

Barcelona are determined to secure a January exit for forgotten France centre-back Samuel Umtiti, according to reports. Umtiti, 28, was pushed towards the exit door in the summer as the Catalans looked to make drastic cuts amid a financial situation labelled “very worrying” by president Joan Laporta. The defender, however, rejected offers from Lazio, Besiktas and Nice, then a meeting with club hierarchy gained him another chance. This has not materialised, with boss Ronald Koeman failing to hand him a single appearance in 2021/22. SPORT have reported that his employers are determined to get him off the wage bill in the winter. Umtiti is under contract at Camp Nou until summer 2023. The World Cup 2018 winner is currently behind Eric Garcia, Ronald Araujo, Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Oscar Mingueza in the pecking order.

Top 2022 recruit Shaedon Sharpe 'strongly considering' enrolling early at Kentucky

The top high school basketball recruit in the class of 2022 is reportedly considering following the lead of Emoni Bates and Jalen Duren and jumping to the college ranks earlier than originally expected.

Glendale (Ariz.) Dream City Christian shooting guard Shaedon Sharpe is “strongly considering” enrolling early at Kentucky for the second semester, according to 247Sports. Sharpe would not play for the Wildcats this upcoming season, much like Hamidou Diallo when he left Putnam Science Academy early to join Kentucky midway through the 2016-2017 season.

“Shaedon Sharpe’s development is well ahead of schedule, as a result, he is considering enrolling earlier than expected at the University of Kentucky,” 247Sports’ Travis Branham wrote.

Enrolling early would allow Sharpe to continue his accelerated development under the guidance of John Calipari and his coaching staff. Sharpe would not factor into Kentucky’s on-court plans during the 2021-22 college basketball season, but his time spent practicing with the team during the spring semester would likely have him ready to claim a spot in the starting lineup in 2022-23.

Sharpe’s potential early enrollment also puts him one step closer to the NBA draft. Diallo never played a game at Kentucky, instead using his time with the program to develop and jump straight to the professional ranks. Diallo was ultimately selected in the second round of the 2018 draft.

A final decision on Sharpe’s future has yet to be made, but one could come soon, according to Branham.

NFCA Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll: Week 8

LOUISVILLE, Ky. —Skutt Catholic kept up its winning ways, adding a district sweep and two state tournament victories to remain No. 1 in the NFCA Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll for an eighth straight week.

The (31-0) Skyhawks took two games from O’Neill last week, then defeated Norris, 5-1, and rolled past Bennington, 8-1, on Wednesday in state play. Skutt plays 10th-ranked Hastings (34-4) in a winner’s bracket game later today for a berth in Friday’s state final. The Skyhawks are vying to complete the first undefeated season in the 25-year history of Nebraska’s Class B tournament.

Meanwhile, No. 2 Lutheran (23-0) continued its perfect season, defeating Wheat Ridge, 11-2, last Friday. The Lions have a Colorado Class 3A, Region 1 semifinal game against Sand Creek on Saturday, with the winner guaranteed a spot (the two finalists in each region both qualify) in the state tournament.

Defending Georgia state 7A titlist East Coweta (22-1) wrapped up a first-round playoff series on Wednesday, sweeping Brookwood, 5-1 and 9-4. Jaliyah Holmes was again dominant in the circle for the third-ranked Indians, fanning 17 batters for the two games, while Emma Elrod had three homers in the doubleheader.

No. 10 Washington (35-5) claimed one of the Oklahoma state titles that were decided last weekend, routing Coalgate, 12-0, in the Class 3A final, after dispatching Comanche, 10-0, in the semis. Poll newcomer Silo (36-7) is the other ranked Oklahoma state champion, joining the mix this week at No. 21 following Saturday’s 2-1 Class 2A victory over Morrison. The remaining Oklahoma classes open their state quarterfinals today at the USA Softball Hall of Fame complex.

State rankings submitted by NFCA member coaches are used to compile the NFCA Fall High School Top 25 Coaches Poll. Teams are chosen based on performance, roster quality and strength of schedule. Five states — Colorado, Georgia, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Missouri — play a fall fastpitch schedule, while Iowa plays a summer schedule.

J'Mond Tapp explains why he committed to Texas instead of in-state LSU

A quick scroll through the 247Sports page of the top Louisiana high school football players in the class of 2022 shows LSU dominance: Tigers commit. Tigers commit. A player not committed, but every prediction from the recruiting site projects him to chose LSU. Tigers commit.

But suddenly, in the sea of purple, there’s a longhorn.

That’s four-star defensive end J’Mond Tapp, who committed to Texas in late August. He had been speaking to LSU recruiters since his sophomore year, but this year, he became the one to break the trend of Louisiana high school players choosing to geaux to LSU.

Tapp spoke to the Daily Advertiser recently about his decision.

“I ain’t going to lie to you, LSU would have been my school if it was out-of-state,” he told the local outlet. “I don’t want to stay in-state.”

Tapp became more interested in Texas after visiting the school in June, the Advertiser reported.

The city’s atmosphere played as big a factor in Tapp’s decision as the football program itself.

“That’s where I’ll be for the next three to four years, so it’s more about the environment, the city and the place,” Tapp said. “(Austin) is more of a city that you would think of. You know how like you’re in your own place for so long, that you can only imagine what other places are like? That’s what it’s like.”

For Tapp, exploring a new environment was a critical part of his search. The University of Texas provided that opportunity for him.

USA TODAY Super 25 Week 8 Preview: No. 9 Center Grove, Cathedral clash

After an eventful week of high school football, it’s time to take a look at what the country’s elite teams will be up against this weekend.

All eyes in Indiana will be on No. 9 Center Grove and Cathedral. Both teams are undefeated and Center Grove is on a 22-game winning streak. Cathedral has won 21 out of its last 22 games, with its lone loss coming to Center Grove by just four points.

No. 11 Centennial and No. 15 St. Thomas Aquinas are also in for a challenge. Centennial will take on a Norco team that is hungry for an upset, while St. Thomas Aquinas takes on a Cardinal Gibbons team that pulled off a stunner against the Raiders last season.

With that being said, let’s see what’s in store for each team in USA TODAY Sports’ Super 25 during the eighth weekend of the 2021 high school football season.

Kayleb Wagner meets Derrick Henry at Titans-Jaguars game

Kayleb Wagner’s junior season at Baker High School in Florida has been one he will never forget.

Wagner made Florida high football history in September, shattering Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry’s single-game rushing record with a 535-yard, six-touchdown performance. Henry, a former star at Yulee High School, then reached out to Wagner on Instagram to congratulate him on breaking his record — one that had stood for nearly a decade.

On Sunday, the two met face to face before the Titans played the Jaguars in Jacksonville. The Jaguars also provided Wagner with a custom team jersey and custom cleats featuring his name and record-setting statistics.

— Adriel Rocha (@Adriel_Rocha) October 10, 2021

“He congratulated me again, told me to keep working hard and that he was proud of me,” Wagner said of meeting Henry in an interview with MaxPreps.

Wagner’s record-setting performance made national headlines and his story has served as an inspiration to people across the nation. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back was born without a left hand and part of his left forearm due to amniotic band syndrome and has still been able to dominate on the gridiron while also serving as a role model in his community.

Wagner has been on an absolute tear since the beginning of Baker’s season, as he rushed for 267 yards and four touchdowns on just four carries in its season opener against Rocky Bayou Christian. Wagner rushed for 211 yards and a touchdown in a 35-6 win over Jay High School, giving him 1,562 yards so far this season.

“He can run that rock,” Henry said of Wagner in an interview with CBS. “Once he breaks that line, he’s out. I’m happy to be able to meet him and to get to talk and visit with him a little bit. I wish him the best. Records are meant to be broken.”
